What is Going on in Your Backyard?
February 11, 2008 - Erickson, MB
This informational meeting introduces the Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserves proposed "Mountainside Community Woodlands Project". Nature Conservancy Canada and MAFRI's Agro Woodlot Program explains how woodlot management and conservation agreements are compatible. They'll discuss how harvesting can contribute to enhanced stand health, sustained environmental services and rural economic development.

Solar Kiln Design and Drying
August 22, 2007 - Portage la Prairie 
Instructor:  Jim Birkemeier.
This will be a unique opportunity to see a solar kiln under construction. Jim Birkemeier is one of North America’s leading examples of how woodlot owners can maximize the value of their logs. Jim will be returning to Manitoba to explain why handling and storage is so important to lumber quality. He’ll walk you through one of his solar kiln designs and explain drying techniques. In addition, Jim will explain how much income you can generate at each step in the value added process from milling to drying, molding and installing hardwood flooring. This will be a motivational experience for anyone wondering how to add value to their hardwood lumber.

The Value Added Adventure

Jim will describe how he uses Full Vigor forestry to improve the growth and value of his woodlot. He’ll also explain how he built a reputation for producing quality hardwood floors by focusing on the details from milling to drying, molding and installing hardwood flooring. Jim will also share his experience in marketing his unique products to urban consumers. Bandsaw Mill Alignment and Bandsaw Sharpening

If you are having problems sawing lumber, this workshop will help you understand how to decide if you have a problem with your mill or your bandsaw blades. This practical workshop explains how to align a bandsaw mill as well as demonstrates how to sharpen and set bandsaw blades.
