Strawberry - Insect Control

Preharvest Intervals for Insecticides

Preharvest intervals are listed on the labels of many pesticides registered for use on food crops. The time period given indicates that the crop should not be harvested for that time interval after application of the chemical, in other words the minimum number of days which must pass before fruit is picked. If the crop is harvested before the indicated interval has elapsed there could be unsafe or unacceptable residues of the pesticide remaining in or on the harvested fruit.

When pesticide applications are being considered, take note of the required preharvest interval and allow for that time period before harvest.

The following table gives the required preharvest intervals for insecticides listed in this guide.

INSECTICIDES - Required Preharvest Interval in Days After application of a pesticide do not pick fruit for the number of days indicated on the table.

Insect Control in the Fruiting Years

Scout plantings for insects on a regular basis. The crop year has been divided under headings according to appropriate time to spray (i.e. Buds Extending from the Crown Through Bloom). Check for the insect of concern under the "Time to Spray" heading and apply one of the products listed in the pesticide column or in the appropriate table.

Cyclamen mites
  • Kelthane AP-35

  • Thiodan

  • Endosulfan

  • Thionex

Ensure penetration of the spray into the crown bud area. Application of Thiodan and Endosulfan and Thionex should be made before bud formation.

Strawberry cutworm (crown borer)
  • Lorsban 4E
  • Pyrinex 480EC

One application per season only. To be applied June 1 - June 15. Pre-harvest interval 20 days.

Grey garden slug Lannate Toss-N-Go

To control slug larvae, apply at mid-bloom (50%) in late evening. Pre-harvest interval 14 days. Slugs may become a problem due to excessive straw cover and moisture. Reducing the straw cover should help to lessen the slug problem.

Aphids Click here for insecticides

Aphids do not often cause serious plant injury on their own, however, some aphid species are important vectors of virus diseases. Apply insecticides as necessary.

Tarnished plant bug Click here for insecticides

These can cause injury to foliage and fruit. Berry malformation is a result of feeding activity. Watch for adults on leaves and check blossom clusters for nymphs. Apply a recommended insecticide when bugs are active at first bloom and again about 10 days later. Check for tarnished plant bug damage to foliage. (Little white flecks on leaves and or leaves may curl up).

Spider mites Click here for miticides

These mites feed on undersides of leaves. Populations can expand rapidly during periods of hot weather.

Clipper weevil Click here for insecticides

The adult female punctures the flower bud and inserts an egg, then crawls down the stem and severs it. Watch for evidence of clipped buds. Recommended insecticides must be applied when buds are developing and at early bloom.

Other insects Click here for insecticides

Leaf rollers and leafhoppers are occasional pests in Manitoba but, they rarely reach damaging levels. Leafhoppers may act as vectors of some mycoplasma (virus-like) diseases.

Spider mites may be a problem during hot weather. Other insects may occasionally appear (i.e. aphids, leaf rollers, leafhoppers).

  • A number (example: 7) indicates the product is registered and denotes the preharvest interval in days for that product.

  • * These insecticides are not for application during the bloom period.

  • X Indicates the product is registered for control but should not be applied during the bloom period. Application may be made when buds are extending from the crown.

  • a Red mites only

  • Avoid insecticide applications during the bloom period whenever possible to protect pollinating insects.
