Fertility

Research Information is scarce, but good results have been obtained in Manitoba by fertilizing equivalent to a high-yielding wheat crop i.e., total available plus applied of 80-100 N, 45 P, 60 K, 15 S lbs/acre of N, P2O5, K2O, and S respectively. Good fertility will help give good weed control.

Limited nitrogen rate trials suggest hemp does not respond to excessive Nitrogen fertilizer trials, Chart 3 is an example illustrating no significant yield increase after 140 lbs/acre available actual N.

Hemp Nitrogen Fertility Trial

Limited Phosphate trials indicate a reasonable tolerance to seed placed phosphate. Under average growing conditions (Chart 4) plant population and grain yield was not affected by increasing rates of P205. At  suggested rates of 30 to 40 pounds actual P per acre, damage is not expected. As with other crops, the risk of damage increases when the crop is germinating under stress conditions (eg. Dry, deep, wet, cool etc.)
