Galls are commonly found on saskatoon and chokecherry, in all production areas. They are also widely found on a variety of other plants.
Gall insects occasionally cause formation of galls on leaves and flowers. The galls are caused by a variety of insects. On saskatoon and chokecherry, most are caused by certain types of midge, tiny wasps or mites. The insects associated with the galls are tiny and live and feed within the gall. Flower galls are caused by a midge (Cecidomyiidae), which lays its eggs within the flower bud. Mites (Eriophyiidae) cause galls to form on leaves. Bud galls are caused by an unidentified, aphid-like insect.
Galls formed on leaves cause minimal damage. The damage is primarily cosmetic in nature.
Scouting is not necessary.
No economic thresholds have been established, as these insects do not cause economic damage. Control measures are not necessary.
