Agricultural Crown Lands Leasing Program Policies

Cropping Lease

When Crown land has the capability to support continuous arable agriculture, the land can be rented under cropping lease.

Land Suitability

  • Lands are to have soils having no or moderate limitations to sustainable production of annual field crops. These soils would generally be included within class 1, 2, or 3 under the soil capability system.
  • Land must have been identified as being available for annual cropping.
  • Lands must also be located in areas which have the required access and/or drainage infrastructure exists to sustain continuous cropping.

Eligibility

Lessees must be eligible under The Crown Lands Act to hold Crown land and must meet all criteria under the Eligibility to Acquire and/or Hold Crown Land Under Agricultural Lease or Permit Policy.

Allocation

Lands identified as available for continuous cropping are advertised and allocated on a tender basis. The advertising and tendering of land may be waived at the Director's discretion where, due to limited access or physical features the logical user(s) of the land is limited. This land can be allocated to the logical user or by way of closed tenders to two or more logical users.

Tenure

Cropping Leases will be issued for a five-year term with no right of renewal.
