Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC)
The objective of the Manitoba
Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) is to support and to encourage
the development and diversification of Manitoba’s rural economy
through the provision of credit and programs to manage income risk. MASC is divided into two types of programming: credit programming
(formerly the Manitoba Agricultural Credit Corporation) and income
risk management programming (formerly the Manitoba Crop Insurance
Corporation).
Under credit programming, the
activities that are performed include providing direct loans for land
purchases and other farming activities, guaranteeing farm loans made
by the private sector, providing interest benefits through the young
farmer rebate, providing special assistance in co-operation with the
Manitoba Farm Mediation Board, providing emergency financial
assistance on the direction of the Government of Manitoba, and
providing financial assistance for rural economic development.
Under income risk management
programming, the activities that are performed include administering
the Canada-Manitoba Production Insurance Program, offering
unsubsidized hail insurance for crops, administering the Wildlife
Damage Compensation Program (which covers damage to agricultural
products caused by migratory waterfowl and big game animals, as well
as livestock predation), and administering other Government of Manitoba
programs that provide income compensation.
