Herd:

My herd consists of twenty-one Nubian and Saanen cross does and doelings. My older does are Saanen and the doelings are all Nubian cross. I have two Nubian bucks and am looking to add a registered Nubian Buck to bring conformity to the herd.

Herd/Farm Accomplishments:

Farm/Facility:

The farm is situated in the Shell River Valley and provides ample hillside grazing. An alfalfa mix pasture is used for producing hay for overwintering. The herd is currently kept in an old insulated dairy barn and graze behind a portable electric fence in summer.

Management:

The goats are fed on a ration of hay and grain overwinter. They have access to minerals, salt and water at all times. When available fruits and vegetables are added to their diet.  In summer they rotationally graze on native pasture and their diet is supplemented with grain and hay. I keep records of births, medicines used and any movements of goats on/off the farm. I also have a herd record book. All of these assist me when making decisions about any animal in the herd.

Herd Health:

Health checks are made daily to see if the goats are off feed etc. They are currently de-wormed every three months with Safeguard, however I have found Valbazen to be more effective. If any health problems do arise they are treated in the appropriate way.

Marketing:

I market my wethers and bucklings and any cull does/bucks are Heartland Livestock in Yorkton when they are around 90lbs. I have also had interest from people about privately purchasing some doelings and have also had requests for chevon.
