Food, Recipes and Crafts From Sheep

The wide variety of foods, recipes and crafts which can be generated from the sheep industry provides Manitoba with tremendous opportunity for economic development and expansion. Canada currently imports approximately 50% of the lamb and mutton it consumes on a annual basis, thus providing significant room for expansion of the industry in Canada without any increase in domestic consumption. That being said, lamb has formed a major component of the diet of many cultures in the world for centuries and no doubt demand will increase in Canada’s multi-cultural society if a ready supply of reasonably priced product is available. Sheep, in addition to being efficient converters of grass to meat, are the ruminant of choice for producing Omega 3 rich meat from grass. The advantages of sheep’s milk and value added dairy products are covered in the milking section. Sheep also provide a host of value added opportunities for crafts such as felt products (hats, vests, etc) from the wool or sheep-skin products from the hides.
