The sheep dairy industry in Canada and in particular in Manitoba is in its infancy. However due to the excellent quality and high food value of the end products there is considerable potential for adding value to existing sheep operations or for a new sheep enterprise. There is currently an expanding market for sheeps milk in Manitoba, plus opportunities to process sheeps milk into value added products such as cheese or yogurt. Advice can be obtained from the Department of Food Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba. Regulations and requirements for establishment of a sheep dairy can be obtained from the Animal Industries Branch, Manitoba Agriculture and Food. The sites for which we have provided links will provide some information on start-up requirements as well as providing some information on sources of breeding stock.
