ARDI-FUNDED RESEARCHERS PRESENT AT NATIONAL NUTRITION CONGRESS

June 18, 2007 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Two ARDI-funded researchers will be making presentations at the Canadian Nutrition Congress, beginning June 19th at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Dr. Nancy Ames, with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Cereal Research Centre, and Dr. Martin Entz, with the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba, are providing research overviews alongside an international cast of speakers representing countries such as England, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan and the United States.

The Canadian Nutrition Congress represents the first time the Canadian Section of the American Oil Chemists' Society (CAOCS), the Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) and the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences (CSNS) have come together to hold a joint meeting.

“Winnipeg is the ideal location for this conference,” says ARDI Chair David Gislason.  “When it comes to understanding what we eat, we have some of the best scientists in the country right here in Manitoba.  They’re working in labs at the Canadian Centre for Agri-food Research in Health and Medicine, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Cereal Research Centre, the Food Development Centre and the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals – just to name a few.  These people will bring new opportunities to Manitoba farmers and will play a role in improving the health of Canadians.”

As a result of this burgeoning cluster of nutrition expertise, ARDI has had the opportunity to fund a diverse group of researchers.  In fact, a review of the organizing committee for the Canadian Nutrition Congress shows that more than half have been recipients of ARDI grants.  ARDI-funded researchers are studying:

  • the potential health benefits of one of the most promising health foods of the future – an essential fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)

  • the anti-inflammatory properties of flaxseed oil and canola oil

  • the potential health benefits of eating folate-enriched eggs, and much more.
