WINNIPEG, NOV. 19, 2007 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Acclaimed Manitoba scientist Dr. Digvir Jayas is the newest member of the
Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative (ARDI) Council. Dr. Jayas is Associate Vice-President (Research) at the University of Manitoba.

ARDI Council Chair David Gislason says Dr. Jayas’ extensive experience in leading research projects will bring invaluable perspective to the Council. “Dr. Jayas has a remarkable track record in seeking answers to agricultural-related questions through innovative research,” said Gislason. “His knowledge will add depth to our discussions as we consider the merits of research and development proposals submitted.”

Dr. Jayas is Canada Research Chair in Stored-Grain Ecosystems and has authored or
co-authored more than 500 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books. He is an engineer and an agrologist, whose areas of research include the physical properties of agricultural products; storage of grains, oilseeds, potatoes and meats; mathematical modelling of biological systems; and digital image processing for grading and processing operations in the agri-food industry.

The nine-member ARDI Council now consists of: Kelley Fitzpatrick, David Gislason (Chair), Dr. Agnes Grant, George Hacking, Dr. Digvir Jayas, Goldwyn Jones, Judy Kostyshyn, Roz Stewart, and Calvin Vaags.

ARDI Council meets today and again on Nov. 30, 2007 to review more than two dozen applications for funding. ARDI is a research and development granting program of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives. It is funded through the Agricultural Policy Framework, a federal-provincial-territorial long-term action plan for agriculture.
