Previous
to this ARDI project, the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association had
done limited alternative pulse variety testing through its
relationship with the Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Team. This
limited testing was made up of 2 lentil testing sites at Boissevain
and Hamiota; 1 fababean site at Dauphin; and 6 pea sites at Hamiota,
Dauphin, Arborg, Thornhill, Morden and Boissevain.
This project
enabled the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association to expand their
evaluation of alternative pulse types predominately in western
Manitoba. ARDI funding allowed for new chickpea testing at Melita; 2
additional lentil sites at Roblin and Melita; 3 additional sites
testing dry edible beans at Boissevain, Binscarth and Brandon; and 2
addition fababean sites at Arborg and Winnipeg/Morris.
Over the 2
years of the project, the following were evaluated:
-
80 extra
site-years of lentil data (20 entries times 2 sites/year over 2
years)
-
36 extra
site-years of fababean data (average of 9 entries times 2 sites/year
over 2 years)
-
102 extra
site-years of narrow row edible bean data (17 entries times 3
sites/year over 2 years)
-
48
site-years of chickpea data (24 entries times 1 site/year over 2
years)
Of these
trials, the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association and ultimately the
Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Team were able to utilize and
publish:
-
40 extra
site-years of lentil data (20 entries over 2 years) at the Roblin
site - data from the Melita sites was lost due to a combination of
high weed pressure and herbicide injury in 2002 and drought in 2003
-
27 extra
site-years of fababean data (9 entries over 2 years in Arborg and 1
year of data from Winnipeg in 2003)
-
51 extra
site-years of narrow row edible bean data (17 entries over 2 years
at Boissevain, and 17 entries in Binscarth in 2002)
-
0 site
years of chickpea data, this was partially environmental, but also
indicative of the marginal adaptability of chickpeas in southwestern
Manitoba
