This project is part of a collaborative research and extension effort on the part of the University of Manitoba, staff of the Manitoba Crop Diversification Centre, the Early Dying of Potato Taskforce of Manitoba, potato producers and processes of Manitoba to prevent the spread of Early Dying of Potato and disinfest areas afflicted with the disease.

Within recent years producers believe Early Dying of Potato is an increasing constraint to realizing yield gains, and in many cases it is believed to be causing yield declines.  On-going studies are showing the presence of the wilt-fungus Verticillium and the root-lesion nematode Pratylenchus in many Manitoba potato producing soils.  Verticillium and Pratylenchus are the major causal agents of Early Dying in other potato producing regions of North America.

This project develops disease control strategies by targeting the removal of Verticillium and Pratylenchus from infested soil in order to reduce disease.  The approach to disinfestation of soil is to identify green manure plants and organic amendments that most reduce levels of Verticillium and Pratylenchus in soil.  These will be used in a 3-year field trial examining their effect in reducing Early Dying of Potato at the Manitoba Crop Diversification Centre in Winkler.  Laboratory and greenhouse studies will evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the treatments to reduce Early Dying of Potato in the variety of soil types in which potatoes are grown in Manitoba.  It is expected that the results of this project will be relayed to producers through extension activities of the collaborators and can result in improved production efficiency and economic benefit to the potato industry in Manitoba.
