The Manitoba Pulse Growers
Association represents some 3,300 producers of peas, edible beans, lentils,
fababeans, chickpeas and soybeans throughout Manitoba. The association is
funded by a check-off of pulse crop sales. Close to 50% of the funds are
used for research to improve varieties, disease control and agronomy for
Manitoba producers. As well, the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association has
become an effective voice with governments and their agencies in regards to
changes in crop insurance safety nets, grading and standards, licensing and
security, and pesticide policies. The organization has a domestic promotion
program to improve and increase the use of pulse crops both for human and
animal consumption and is intensely involved in the efforts of Pulse Canada
to access new markets throughout the world.
Through this project, the
applicant will address three specific objectives:
-
Variety Testing – to
provide local data and acquire baseline agronomic information for non
traditional pulse crops or pulse crops being moved into new areas. This
includes a new fababean coop trial, new testing of adzuki, lupins and
other novel pulses, an extra site for a narrow row edible bean trial,
soybean trials to divide Roundup Ready and conventional varieties, and
natto bean trials.
-
Soybean Maturity - to
determine the soybean yield and seed quality of several soybean varieties
that have a range of maturity ratings between 2350 to 2600 heat units.
Frost simulations and 3 different seeding dates will be used.
-
Soybean Agronomy – to
identify varieties resistant to iron chlorosis, to verify associated yield
losses, to study the effect of herbicides on soybean maturity, to examine
plant populations, and to measure effect of fall nitrogen application.
