In Progress

Pasmo disease of flax is widespread in Manitoba.  It reduces the yield and quality of harvested seed, thus negatively affecting the health food market of flaxseed.  Pasmo also reduces the yield and quality of the fibre in the infected stems, resulting in reduced interest of the industry and a lower market value of the straw from infested fields.

This study will investigate the epidemiology of pasmo in flax, including the over-wintering of the fungus, the source and timing of primary inoculum in the spring, and the disease development during the growing season.  Flax accessions will be screened to identify sources of resistance to this disease.  The applicant will also investigate the efficacy of fungicide applications as a short-term control measure of this disease.  The overall benefits of this project are the reduction of production risks to the growers and a better quality of seed for the consumer.

Dr. Khalid Rashid of the Morden Research Station, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is a co-applicant of this project.

The Pembina Valley Development Corporation is a funding partner.
