Evaluation of bioactive compounds in buckwheat with anti-diabetes properties.
We have demonstrated that blood glucose is reduced by 20% within 30 minutes of oral administration
of a buckwheat extract in a diabetic animal model.  Further experiments using cultured cells have revealed
the presence of a novel compound(s) that functions through a specific intracellular signalling pathway that is
not activated by insulin.  The objective of this proposal is to further characterize the molecules
through which the bioactive compound(s) in the buckwheat extract operate.  We will employ screening techniques
to identify more specific gene target(s).  This would greatly facilitate identification of the novel buckwheat
bioactive(s) and their physiological effects for glucose regulation in diabetes.
