The purpose of this project was to research seed production methodology that could be used for corn in Manitoba.  Due to the short growing season, there is very little corn seed production in Manitoba.  CanaMaize Seed tried many techniques in different areas over several years to discover if it was possible to produce seed here and to find ways to improve seed quality on the seed produced.

Part 1 of the study was to determine the heat units of different areas to find the most suitable areas for production.  It was determined that there were adequate heat units for maturity, but dry down was an issue.  An early frost would likely ruin any seed production that season.

Part 2 studied harvest methodology.  Different techniques were used and the seed was analyzed for quality based on germ and vigour.  It was found that while combining the seed lowered germination substantially if the moisture was over 18%, picking the seed did maintain the germination even at high moisture levels.

Part 3 studied the potential for hybrid seed development in Manitoba.  It determined that while it was possible, earlier germplasm would be needed for it to be reliable.

Part 4 studied seed storage under different conditions on seed of various quality.  It became evident that it is necessary to maintain consistent humidity and temperature levels in order to maintain the germinations at the levels.  No storage techniques were identified that could sustain germination in seed that entered storage in poor quality.
