Community-based watershed management is a process for managing water resources that involves engaging stakeholders in making and implementing management decisions that are sustainable and appropriate for local conditions.
Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) is involved in watershed management planning by providing technical information to the planning process. This often includes soils information such as soil texture, agriculture capability, and areas prone to wind and water erosion.
MAFRI was involved in delivering the Equivalent Agri-Environmental Planning (EAEP) process which is a group-based Environmental Farm Planning (EFP) process under the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF).
MAFRI is also involved in the Integrated Watershed Management Planning (IWMP) process implemented by Manitoba Water Stewardship. The IWMP and EAEP processes were designed to complement each other.
Ongoing research is required to better understand the role of agriculture in the watershed. MAFRI is supporting watershed research by providing technical support to the Manitoba Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Management Practices (WEBs) steering committee.
