IWMPs

The purpose of Integrated Watershed Management Planning (IWMP) is to identify and document current watershed health, create a drinking source water protection plan, and provide a management plan for other local water-related issues.

The IWMP process is underway across the province and both Manitoba Water Stewardship (MWS) and Water Planning Authority (WPA) staff are involved in organizing submissions from federal, provincial (including MAFRI) and non-government organizations. MAFRI staff provide a package of technical information on soil and agriculture topics.

MWS is providing each WPA with a special IWMP grant. In addition, a significant amount of time and effort from MWS and other provincial departments including MAFRI is being provided in the form of technical inputs to the state of the watershed report and the development of the IWMP.

MAFRI has provided soils and agriculture information to the WPAs to support the IWMP process. This information includes information about agriculture capability, soil surface texture, salinity, and the risks of soil erosion due to water and wind.

Additional research is essential to understand the effects of agriculture on watersheds. To support this ongoing research effort, MAFRI provides technical support and direction to the Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Management Practices (WEBs), Manitoba project.

The following IWMPs are in progress and have information available for public consultation:

The East Souris River Watershed IWMP is completed.
