Nutritional Labelling

FDC Home > Nutritional Labelling

The Food Development Centre is implementing the use of the nutritional labelling software program, Genesis™ & D SQL, designed by ESHA Research. This database is comprised of 26,000 entries of foods and food items from a variety of food groups, including specialty items, fast foods, frozen foods, and combination foods and cooking ingredients. Label capabilities include both the United States and Canada. The Genesis™ program can also be used for product formulation to achieve nutrient content claims. (i.e. low fat, low sodium) or used to formulate products to achieve prerequisite nutrient levels for any of the five health claims. (allowed January 1, 2003)

Chemical Analysis vs. Database

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible to assess compliance of nutrition labelling, nutrient content claims and health claims. Manufacturers are responsible for the accuracy of nutrition information and in advertising; however they are not required to use laboratory chemical analysis to generate the nutritional data. Industry and manufacturers may choose nutrient data bases (Genesis™ & D SQL) to develop nutrition labels. The CFIA recognizes the variability inherent in nutrient concentrations and has established tolerances for the variability. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) plans to provide a voluntary label review but ultimately manufacturers are responsible for the nutritional information on their label.
