Court Records

There are a variety of court records which may be used for genealogical research. The following are among the most commonly consulted.


Title: Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, Estate Files

    Ref: ATG 0025A (Winnipeg); ATG 0064A (Regional Courts)
    Dates: 1871 - 1988.   For dates of records received from each court, click here.
    Content: Documents pertaining to settlement of an estate of a deceased person including: applications, wills, affidavits, and property inventories and valuations. Beginning in 1973, grants of probate or other instruments are also on file.  Prior to 1973, they were maintained in separate probate books (Reference: Winnipeg probate books ATG 0022; regional courts probate books J 0289).

Title: Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, Divorce Files

    Dates: 1917 - 1977.  For dates of records received from each court click here.
    Content: Records of divorce applications and proceedings in the Court of Queen's Bench, including notice of petition, answer of respondent, and exhibits. Pre-1985 files include decree nisi and decree absolute.

Title: Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench / County Court, Civil Files

    Dates: 1883 - 1988.  For dates of records received from each court, click here.
    Content: Records of civil proceedings, including statements of claim, notices of motion, statements of defense and orders. Prior to 1984, the Court of Queen's Bench and County Court had concurrent jurisdiction over civil matters. In 1984, responsibilities of the County Court were assumed by the Court of Queen's Bench.
