with a detailed analysis on expenditures by each person. Further information may be gained
from ledgers which reflect the daily expenditures of men at the posts.

Content: The format and nature of information changed over the years. If the volume
covers more than one year, arrangement is by year and then by district. At first,
employees were listed in order of rank. From 1791 on, employees are listed in alphabetical
order. Earlier lists indicate only what an employee did, annual wage, and when contract
expired. The right-hand page was reserved for comments on character and ability, and
sometimes intentions.
