Genealogical Records at the Hudson's Bay Company Archives

Introduction

The depth, span and scope of records held by the Hudson's Bay Company Archives is unparalleled in the history of business. The Hudson's Bay Company was involved in the North American fur trade for over three hundred years. During that time, its work force was remarkably varied. As the Company originated in England, many employees were hired from England itself, from Scotland, especially the Orkney Islands, and from Ireland and Wales.  French Canadian and Aboriginal people later joined the Company. Men were also recruited from Norway and Hawaii. By the twentieth century, English Canadians and Newfoundlanders had been added to the mix.

In order to begin research into the employment of company servants, it is best to know the approximate dates and region of employment. The Archives has pre-assembled information for some employees.  This may help you in your research.  (Visit our Search Tips page for more information).

Note: Records themselves are not available in digital form.
