Private Records
Archives Vertical Files (AVF)
- Subject files containing notes and references to published sources. They are created by
staff in response to research inquiries and are added to as new information becomes
available.

Hudson's Bay Company Archives
Post Histories
- give location and brief history of the post
- list post managers
- provide references to original textual records, maps, photographs and drawings
Biographies
Record of service for individuals that worked for the Hudson's Bay Company and the
North West Company. They usually include:
- parish of origin or place of birth
- positions, posts and districts in which they served
- family information if available
- references to photographs or drawings
Ship Histories
- name of ship and area of service
- physical description and brief history of operation
- list of commanders/masters
- bibliography
- references to original textual records and photographs
Search Files
- Subject files containing notes and extracts from original documents and references to
published sources. They were originally created by staff in London in response to research
inquiries and are added to as new information becomes available.
Hudson's Bay Company Archives Web Site
- A variety of research tools are available on the HBCA web site. These tools
describe many of the records and microfilm available. Please note: the records
themselves are not available on the Internet.

Government Records
A Guide to Family & Community History is available at the
Archives of Manitoba. The Guide outlines resources useful for genealogical research, including court
records, land records, educational records and municipal records.
Guide to Government Records in the Archives provides summary
descriptions of all records transferred to the Archives. It also
includes detailed lists of many series. The Guide is available at the Archives of Manitoba.
a Guide to
The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act - Access
and Privacy Directory identifies a full range of active and archival records
created by Manitoba government departments and Crown agencies. The Access and
Privacy Directory is available for consultation at the Archives of Manitoba and in public libraries.
It can be purchased, in English or French, from Manitoba Government Statutory
Publications. The Access
and Privacy Directory is available on the Internet.
