Alexander Post Office
2nd Avenue W,
Alexander

Designation Date: September 13, 1993
Designation Authority: The R.M. of Whitehead
Present Owner: privately owned
The building known as the Alexander Post Office was a multi-purpose, privately owned structure built around 1885 by James Frederick Walker, the town's first postmaster. The Walker family had a long association with the community of Alexander. They lived in the building and provided postal services to area residents for over 65 years until a new postmaster was hired in 1949. The two-storey wood-frame building is possibly the oldest privately owned, continuously used postal outlet in Manitoba. The functional requirements resulted in an interesting façade with alternating windows and doors, a gable roof and two twin dormer windows. The main floor is divided into three separate units, with the middle portion used as the post office. The right unit was occupied by the postmaster or postmistress and their family. The left unit was rented space, which included the rural municipal office.
