Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Building

Designation Date: June 15, 1998
Designation Authority: The R.M. of Whitewater
Present Owner: Elgin and District Historical Museum

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce building in Elgin is a good example of the kind of bank buildings erected in small urban centres in the early twentieth century. Built in 1904, it was originally two storeys high, providing accommodation for the bank manager. The second storey was removed in the 1950s, but the neat little building is still a proud presence and, befitting a bank, of brick construction. Architecturally, the designer used the brick to good effect, creating arched bands that encircle the building. The bank was closed in 1995 and now serves as the Elgin and District Historical Museum.
