Reviewed June/July/August 2008

The Manitoba government officially proclaimed September Literacy Month in Manitoba in a news release dated September 1, 2006.

LITERACY PARTNERS OF MANITOBA

"Literacy Partners of Manitoba believes that literacy is a human right, that literacy is everyone's business, and that all Manitobans have a part to play... For 20 years, (1987-2007) the organization has been committed to raising literacy levels in Manitoba." Literacy Partners of Manitoba has the only province-wide adult literacy lending library in Manitoba including books, kits, videos and software. The annual open house is being held on September 8, 2008.

MANITOBA. ADVANCED EDUCATION AND LITERACY. ADULT LEARNING AND LITERACY (ALL)

As part of the Department of Advanced Education and Literacy, ALL administers and supports literacy programs in Manitoba, including training of practitioners and teachers. In preparation for the Adult Literacy Act which will become effective January 1, 2009, the province conducted a consultation process during May and June. See this site for the Manitoba Adult Literacy Strategy and for the excellent collection of Suggested Links.

MANITOBA. EDUCATION AND LITERACY

Three Manitoba government departments (Advanced Education and Literacy; Competitiveness, Training and Trade; Education, Citizenship and Youth) created this gateway as a single source of information about education, training, careers and funding opportunities. For information specific to adult literacy, see the following site within Advanced Education and Literacy.

U.S. and International

NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LITERACY

The National Institute for Literacy provides leadership on literacy issues, including the improvement of reading instruction for children, youth, and adults. In consultation with the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services, the Institute serves as a national resource on current, comprehensive literacy research, practice, and policy.

UNESCO. EDUCATION. INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

The UN has declared 2003-2012 the United Nations Literacy Decade and September 8 has been declared International Literacy Day. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.
