NEW FUND ESTABLISHED TO PROMOTE
WASTE REDUCTION, POLLUTION PREVENTION
Manitoba Conservation Minister Oscar Lathlin has announced the establishment of a new four-year, $2.2 million fund designed to help organizations, businesses and local governments move toward more sustainable waste management and pollution prevention practices.
"There are many challenges facing all Canadians in respect of waste reduction and pollution prevention," said Lathlin. "While all of us have been making strides to reduce waste in recent years, further progress is needed to reach waste reduction goals."
Lathlin said the Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention (WRAPP) Fund, a component of the province's Sustainable Development Innovations Fund, will provide environmental assistance grants for projects that demonstrate the benefits of waste reduction, pollution prevention and environmental education.
A major focus of the WRAPP Fund will be to develop public/private sector partnerships, develop local capacity for sustainable WRAPP activities, and demonstrate the economic viability and environmental benefits of reducing waste and preventing pollution.
"By increasing reduction, recycling and diversion of solid wastes, we will also contribute to Manitoba's objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving energy and creating new economic and employment activities."
The WRAPP fund is open to municipal corporations, Northern Affairs communities, First Nations, private and non-profit organizations, and businesses, educational institutions and community groups.
