FAMILY DOCTOR CONNECTION PROGRAM INTRODUCED
- - -
One Phone Call Connects Patients With Family Physicians Accepting Patients

The Family Doctor Connection phone line at 786-7111 will connect Winnipeggers with family physicians accepting new patients, Health Minister Dave Chomiak and Dr. Kathy Kisil, president of the Manitoba College of Family Physicians, announced today.

"Through this phone number and a co-operative partnership with the college, we’re making it easier for people to find family doctors who are accepting patients," said the minister. "A family physician is a key health care provider who also carries out the important role of directing patients to other required health services. Having a family doctor ensures timely care and is an important first step toward health promotion."

"Given the increasing complexity of the health care system, people need a family doctor more than ever," said Kisil. "Family physicians provide the patient-centred, continuous care that people want, and evidence shows that this type of care results in better health outcomes. This program is an important step toward improving health care delivery to Manitobans."

The Family Doctor Connection pilot program in Winnipeg could act as a blueprint for other Manitoba communities. It is estimated that there are over 100 family doctors in Winnipeg accepting new patients.

A regularly updated database, maintained by Manitoba Health in co-operation with the college, will have a listing of clinics where doctors are accepting new patients. The listing will be updated every three months, and clinics and doctors are encouraged to call in updates. The line will take calls between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and will provide service in French and English.

"We know there are challenges within our health care system," said Chomiak. "We also know there are innovative solutions that make health care services more accessible and effective for Manitobans. Family Doctor Connection is a good example of providing a useful service for people looking for a doctor."

An advisory group made up of college and departmental representatives will review the effectiveness of the program on an ongoing basis. The line is operational effective immediately.
