Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Jean Friesen announced today the province will fund a feasibility study to look at new ways to increase shipments through the Port of Churchill.
Funded through the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI), the $23,130 study will help OmniTRAX Canada Ltd. assess the market potential of developing two-way rail service through the Port of Churchill using the Hudson Bay Railway.
"Churchill has long been Manitoba's ocean gateway to the world," said Friesen. "As the port gears up for the new season, this contribution to their economy through potential job creation and investments is timely."
"As part of our government's Northern Development Strategy, we are committed to enhancing transportation infrastructure in Northern Manitoba," said Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson. "By examining options to expand the port, OmniTRAX will be in a better position to support economic diversification in Churchill as well support new opportunities for eco-tourism."
The REDI Feasibility Studies Program is designed to assist Manitoba businesses confirm the viability of potential business expansions by providing them with access to market research, business planning and preliminary engineering analysis.
Manitoba Intergovernmental Affairs assists communities across Manitoba to build for the next generation. REDI provides $15 million annually to create business opportunities for youth, support industry, develop infrastructure and help rural communities and organizations address local needs and priorities. Through the support of programs such as REDI, the department enables municipalities to provide services and programs that enhance the quality of life for Manitobans.
