WEST NILE VIRUS BULLETIN #10
While West Nile virus can affect people, animals and birds, most people will never get sick from it. The risk to any individual of becoming ill from West Nile virus continues to be very low in Manitoba. There are no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus infection in Manitoba.
On July 27, 2002, two birds from rural Manitoba tested presumptive positive for West Nile virus. These birds were both crows and were found in the R.M. of Russell and the R.M. of Riverside.
On July 27, 2002, three more birds were confirmed positive for West Nile virus in Winnipeg: a blue jay, submitted July 21 from east Winnipeg; and two crows from the east and southeast areas of Winnipeg, also submitted July 21.
Public reporting of dead bird sightings from the crow family (crows, ravens, magpies, blue jays and gray jays) in Winnipeg and throughout rural Manitoba is still encouraged.
All municipalities can play an active role by participating in efforts to reduce standing water, continuing to support public education and assisting with bird surveillance activities.
Fifteen birds in Manitoba have now been confirmed positive for West Nile virus:
