PROVINCE SUPPORTS CAREER FAIR FOR ABORIGINAL STUDENTS

Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Oscar Lathlin today announced a $37,500 grant to the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation for the organization of the 2002 Aboriginal Youth Career Fair 'Blueprint For The Future'.

"The fair helps Aboriginal youth prepare to meet the challenges of today's job market," said Lathlin. "Important links will also be made with business community leaders which will pay dividends down the road."

The career fair, being held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre tomorrow, is expected to attract up to 1,000 Aboriginal high school students from across Manitoba. It provides Aboriginal youth access to role models and important information relating to the diversity of available careers.

"This event offers unique opportunities for Aboriginal youth and their peers to learn about the educational requirements for many diverse career areas," said Education and Youth Minister Ron Lemieux. "The information they gather will help them define their career goals now so they can plan for the future."

Students attending the career fair will receive practical information on career options, educational requirements and current and future employment trends. The students interact with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal professionals and role models. In addition, students visit numerous trade fair booths representing private and public sectors as well as educational institutions.

The grant includes funding from the Manitoba departments of Education and Youth; Advanced Education and Training; Industry, Trade and Mines; Conservation; Culture, Heritage and Tourism; Aboriginal and Northern Affairs; and the Civil Service Commission.
