EXTENDED FERRY OPERATIONS POSE HAZARD FOR NORTHERN COMMUNITY SNOWMOBILERS
- - -
Warm Weather, Continuing Service Weakens Ice On Lakes and Rivers

An ice safety advisory recommending extreme caution for anyone on or near ice was issued to residents of South Indian Lake, Cross Lake, Norway House and Matheson Island today by Transportation and Government Services Minister Scott Smith.

"Warm weather has permitted the province to operate ferry services for an extended period," said Smith. "In addition to the on-going change in climate conditions, frequent crossings break the ice, preventing it from freezing to a safe thickness for snowmobile travel."

Ferry operations are expected to continue as long as weather conditions permit. Until temperatures drop to lower levels, area residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when operating snowmobiles. Open water and thin ice can be difficult to see when travelling on snowmobiles or other off road vehicles in areas served by the ferries.

Residents of the communities are advised to avoid the ferry routes until at least one week after the ferries cease operations and freeze-up has commenced.
