Conservation Minister Steve Ashton today announced $50,000 for a predator management agreement with the Manitoba Trappers Association.
"This is a new approach designed to help producers facing animal loss or injury from predators," said Ashton. "Experienced and licensed trappers will investigate reported problems and use appropriate measures to remove problem animals."
Producers in chronic problem areas will be notified of the project through Manitoba Conservation and Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation offices. The Manitoba Trappers Association will assign a trapper within 24 hours to investigate and place traps to remove problem animals for up to a maximum of five days.
Trappers will be eligible for special permits to provide the specialized service outside of the regular trapping season.
Producers will be required to sign agreements concerning land access and will be provided with information that will minimize the potential for future predator problems.
