SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME (SARS)

Manitoba Health and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority are currently investigating and responding to a probable case of SARS in one individual who recently arrived in Winnipeg following a trip to China.

The patient is currently in isolation at St. Boniface Hospital. Aggressive efforts are being pursued to reach all close contacts of this patient since his symptoms began. Once contacted, they are being instructed to remain at home, and will be monitored by public health staff.

At this time, there is no indication of any other suspected or probable cases in Manitoba.

SARS has been reported in many countries throughout the world. It has been characterized by fever, cough, followed within a few days by shortness of breath and severe illness. Symptoms have occurred within 10 days of exposure, usually within three to five days.
