Manitoba Health and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority continue comprehensive and aggressive precautionary measures in response to a probable case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Manitoba. The patient remains in stable condition at St. Boniface Hospital.
As part of these measures 7 people who have had close contact with the patient (three hospital staff and four others) are now under quarantine in their homes and are being monitored by public health professionals. Monitoring will continue for 10 days. There have been no other reports of suspect or probable cases.
SARS outbreaks have been reported in China including Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore as well as Ontario. It is characterized by fever, cough, shortness of breath and may progress to severe illness. Symptoms appear within 10 days of exposure -- usually within 3-5 days.
Manitobans without a recent history of travel to these places or contact with a case of SARS are not at risk. Manitobans with such a history are advised to watch for symptoms and if they occur, should obtain medical advice promptly, if practical, by phoning ahead.
