CHURCHILL--The Manitoba government has undertaken a major new initiative in developing the Churchill Wildlife Management Area as a premier tourism destination for wildlife viewing, Premier Gary Doer announced today.
"Churchill is internationally recognized as one of the best places in the world for unique arctic wildlife viewing opportunities," said Doer. "Investment in northern tourism initiatives is a priority of the Manitoba government and site improvements will continue to develop Churchill’s reputation as a world-class tourism destination."
Speaking in Churchill today, the premier unveiled designs for the new signage for the new Churchill Wildlife Management Area. The signage is designed to create a focal point for visitors and to support local tourism operators.
Arrival signage was identified as a priority by the Watchable Wildlife Program plan. The purpose of the program is to enhance wildlife viewing at seven key sites for recreational purposes and to stimulate the use of these sites by partnering with the private sector to package experiences for visitors in the adventure travel and eco-tourism sectors.
Churchill is one of the province’s signature eco-tourism destinations. It provides wildlife viewing opportunities and experiences that attract visitors from around the world, contributing over $10 million annually to the provincial economy. Over 1,600 people a week visit Churchill Wildlife Management Area during the peak polar bear viewing season between Oct. 1 and mid-November every year.
"We’re so proud to share the wonderful treasures of Churchill with the rest of the world," said Michael Spence, mayor of Churchill. "Churchill’s economy benefits greatly from the development of eco-tourism and wildlife viewing, and these benefits are essential to the success of our community."
"The Northern Development Strategy outlines the importance of economic development in the North and tourism initiatives play an essential role in growing the northern economy," said Doer. "We are pleased to support tourism initiatives that bring so many benefits to northern communities."
The new signage will be installed in late June, prior to the busy summer wildlife viewing tourism season. For more information on tourism opportunities in Northern Manitoba, visit http://www.travelmanitoba.com/.
