WATER ADVISORY LIFTED AT WEST HAWK LAKE TOWNSITE

The health advisory issued on Aug. 13, 2003, in response to the presence of petroleum contamination in the West Hawk Lake drinking water supply, has been lifted.

Since the health advisory was issued, four new wells have been drilled, flushed and tested, and are now connected to existing municipal mains in the townsite. Manitoba Conservation will continue to monitor the water supply to ensure it meets drinking water guidelines and is continuing to investigate the source of the problem.

Before using the water for human consumption, cottagers and business owners should thoroughly flush their water lines. This can be done by running the hot water until it turns cold and by flushing the cold water lines for at least five minutes. All cisterns should also be drained and flushed with potable water and then re-filled.

On Aug. 13, 2003, water samples taken from the West Hawk Lake town water supply had tested positive for benzene and other chemicals usually found in gasoline. An advisory was issued recommending the community not consume the water until further notice.
