GIMLI—Gimli Community Health Centre, a new facility that will provide enhanced access to quality health care for residents of Gimli and the surrounding region, was officially opened here today by Premier Gary Doer.
“The opening of the Gimli Community Health Centre is another example of this government’s commitment to invest in health care, regardless of where people live,” the premier said. “This state-of-the-art facility will support Interlake Regional Health Authority in providing quality medical care to people in Gimli and the surrounding area.”
“This project will certainly enhance Gimli’s role as a community health care facility within the region,” said Kevin Beresford, chief executive officer, Interlake Regional Health Authority. “Our staff, community partners, project steering committee and planning teams have all played an integral role in this redevelopment project and, on their behalf, we are very pleased with today’s opening.”
“Modernizing health care infrastructure and delivering services in innovative ways are important components of our overall health care strategy,” said Health Minister Dave Chomiak. “They’re also critical in attracting health care professionals to the province and retaining them.”
The $13 million construction and renovation project includes:
more modern inpatient beds including 14 acute, four special and two palliative;
a separate entrance and dedicated space for emergency arrivals and treatment;
added space for community service programs, mental health services, family services and seniors resource services;
redevelopment and expansion in treatment, diagnostic and rehabilitation services; and
a more energy efficient design that allows the facility to be classified as a Power Smart building.
The premier acknowledged the fund-raising efforts of the Gimli community in helping to make the modernization possible. Financial support from the community was approximately $1.3 million.
