PREMIER ANNOUNCES NEW CHEMOTHERAPY CENTRE FOR NEEPAWA

NEEPAWA—Premier Gary Doer announced today a new patient friendly chemotherapy unit to be located at the Neepawa Health Centre has been approved to go to tender.

"Health professionals who are on the front lines of health care delivery have told us the chemotherapy unit is needed so they can treat patients in a space that allows for as much comfort and dignity as possible," the premier said. "This project is part of our government’s on-going commitment to deliver quality patient care for Manitobans no matter where they live."

The $1.2-million, 3,600-square-foot chemotherapy unit will replace temporary facilities at the Neepawa Health Centre where cancer patients are currently treated.

The structure, to be located at the centre, includes five therapy stations, an examination room, a palliative care office and support spaces. It is built in accordance with CancerCare Manitoba’s standards and guidelines.

"This expansion project will ensure safer, better quality patient care, as well as a better working environment for staff members delivering the program," said Penny Sorensen, chief executive officer for the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority (ARHA). The region is thrilled to see this very important project moving forward."

The premier said the new facility is designed to meet the increased demand of cancer patients in the ARHA area. Last year, more than 320 outpatient treatments were provided to cancer patients at the Neepawa site, compared to 285 treatments the previous year.

The Community Cancer Program, which includes sites in Russell and Hamiota, is designed so cancer patients can be treated within a one-hour driving distance of their homes.

"The delivery of this life-saving cancer treatment close to home reduces travel time for patients and allows them to be closer to their families," said the premier.

It is estimated it will take about eight months for the facility to be completed once the tender is awarded. The chemotherapy centre is expected to be opened in 2005.
