STEINBACH—New outpatient chemotherapy and obstetric facilities for Steinbach’s Bethesda Hospital have been approved for design, Health Minister Dave Chomiak has announced.
"This is another step toward revitalizing Manitoba’s health care system," said Chomiak. "Manitobans have said they want more health care facilities closer to home and these two units are an example of how we’re responding to this need."
"The additions to the facility will help meet the needs of cancer and obstetric patients in the South Eastman Regional Health Authority (RHA)," said Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau, speaking here today on behalf of Chomiak.
"This project is very significant to the RHA in two perspectives. First, it is an example of successes that result from great partnerships with Manitoba Health, the Bethesda Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba and South Eastman Health/Santé Sud-Est Inc. collaborating on a common initiative," said Reg Toews, chief executive officer, South Eastman Regional Health Authority. "Secondly, it responds to a significant need to improve the space and services for our cancer care program, as well as provides modern labour/delivery/recovery and post-partum rooms for our expanding obstetrics program."
"This will be an important hub that will provide a network of safe, expert cancer care. With the growing burden of cancer, this centre is sure to expand to meet the growing needs of the community for cancer prevention, early detection and treatment," said Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal, president and CEO of CancerCare Manitoba.
The new three-storey addition to the existing hospital will provide for:
a chemotherapy unit on the main floor in approximately 2,500 square feet of space;
development of four new labour/delivery/recovery and postpartum rooms for families to use during the birthing process; and
other development opportunities in the basement such as an electronic learning centre.
Capital funding to a maximum of $2 million will be cost-shared between the Bethesda Foundation and Manitoba Health, with equal contributions from both parties.
Chomiak acknowledged the hard work of those involved in moving the project forward including Manitoba Health, the Bethesda Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba and the South Eastman Regional Health Authority.
It is estimated it will take about 10 months for the addition to be completed once the tender is awarded. The community cancer care program and obstetric units are expected to be opened in 2006.
