Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Oscar
Lathlin has congratulated 14 young Aboriginal men and women who have been
recognized for their high standards of excellence, dedication and leadership.
The 11th annual Manitoba Aboriginal Youth
Achievement Awards were presented at a ceremony yesterday evening at the
Winnipeg Convention Centre.
“By honouring the accomplishments of these 14
Aboriginal youth, we also honour our elders, our leaders and members of our
community who share a vision of equality and human dignity,” said Lathlin. “This year's recipients are excellent role models
for all young people in our province.”
The awards honour Aboriginal youth achievements in a
variety of categories including academics, athletics, arts, culture, community
involvement/volunteerism, business/entrepreneurship, personal achievement, and
employment in a traditional field.
The awards are hosted by Anishinaabe Oway-Ishi Inc,
a non-profit, community-based employment and training preparation
program. Its training model was designed by Aboriginal youth for
Aboriginal youth who have experienced difficulty accessing employment and
training opportunities.
