Premier Gary Doer today offered his condolences to those who had their lives destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami waves that have killed tens of thousands of people in southern Asia.

"Manitoba is pledging $100,000 that will be distributed through the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation," the premier said. "Manitobans are known for their tireless work and generosity both at home and overseas. We join them in providing support so international agencies can help the people trying to cope with this unspeakable horror."

According to media accounts, a number of countries have been devastated by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck beneath the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia resulting in tsunami waves six metres high.

Along with pledging $100,000 in financial support, the premier said a book of condolences will be made available in the front foyer of the Legislative Building.

"I join my fellow Manitobans in expressing shock and sadness that has resulted from this horrible tragedy," the premier said. "As well as offering support, our thoughts remain with those who have lost loved ones or are awaiting word about the whereabouts of family members who remain missing."
