IMPROVEMENTS BEING MADE TO HELP MANITOBANS

A new application process is being introduced by the Manitoba Housing Authority to better serve Manitobans seeking access to adequate and affordable public housing, Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick announced today.

“After consultation with individuals and community groups we are now able to introduce important and needed improvements that will help provide enhanced service and better meet people’s need for access to public housing,” said Melnick. “Addressing issues related to access to public housing requires that we continually look at options in response to changes in the whole rental housing market, especially lower vacancy rates experienced in the past few years.

The changes to the application process are designed to benefit all applicants, but especially people with disabilities, seniors and families. They will also provide:

People applying for public housing who cannot be accommodated within a year will be advised and their application will be kept on file. Applicants will also be provided with information on other housing options to help them meet their needs. If their personal circumstances change, their information will be updated and their application will be reassessed.

The Manitoba Housing Authority provides about 13,000 housing units for seniors, families and individuals throughout Manitoba. These housing units are primarily made up of apartments and homes.
