FORMER RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL DESIGNATED AS PROVINCIAL HERITAGE SITE

National Aboriginal Day Celebrated Around the Province

The Rufus Prince Building, a former residential school in Portage la Prairie, has been declared a heritage site, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Eric Robinson announced today.

“This positive initiative is only a small step in healing the wounds created by the residential school system,” said Robinson. “Turning the painful legacy into a learning experience is a tribute to the survivors and their families.”

The former residential school and soon-to-be museum means Manitoba will join only one other community, Sault Ste. Marie, in having a museum or interpretive centre dedicated to First Nations traditions in a former residential-school setting.

“While Manitoba has significant First Nation and Métis collections such as those found at the Manitoba Museum, we must continue to ensure there are educational displays around the province from which future generations can learn,” said Robinson.

The museum will include displays, archives, simulated classrooms and a habitat diorama devoted solely to First Nations and Métis heritage. It is anticipated to open in 2008.

The minister will make the formal announcement tomorrow and officially present a Manitoba Heritage Council commemorative plaque at 2 p.m. on-site at the Rufus Prince Building at Long Plains First Nation near Portage la Prairie. The event will also include a traditional powwow dance demonstration and tours of the building.

It is also significant that we will officially make this heritage designation on National Aboriginal Day, a time to reflect on and celebrate our culture,” Robinson said. “I encourage everyone to take the time to learn more about Aboriginal culture and participate in the various celebrations being held around the province.”

Robinson will also join Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Oscar Lathlin tomorrow at The Forks to attend National Aboriginal Day activities starting at 10:45 a.m.
