Premier Gary Doer today offered his sympathy and pledged Manitoba’s support to those who have lost family members and had their lives disrupted by hurricane Katrina.
“We want to offer our sincere sympathy and our assistance to our friends in the southern United States who are facing unquestioned heartache and hardship as a result of this hurricane,” the premier said.
The storm that flooded New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana and devastated coastal communities in Mississippi, Alabama and along the Gulf Coast has resulted in a rising death toll and left thousands of people homeless.
Manitoba has contacted the federal government and has expressed its desire to be part of any Canadian effort to provide support in the hurricane recovery efforts, the premier said. As well, Manitoba Hydro is offering to send staff to the affected area to help restore power.
A book of condolences will be placed in the foyer of the Legislative Building tomorrow so Manitobans can offer their sympathy.
