IMPROVED HIGH-WATER PROTECTION TO BE PROVIDED FOR WINNIPEG BEACH PROVINCIAL PARK

$500,000 Investment to Strengthen Seawall

Winnipeg BeachThis Lake Winnipeg community will be better protected with a $500,000 investment to strengthen the seawall and stabilize the shoreline, Premier Gary Doer announced here today.

“Provincial and municipal officials are working together to help protect a high-use provincial park and the economic heart of the community of Winnipeg Beach,” said Doer. “Today’s investment will ensure the historic boardwalk and waterfront at Winnipeg Beach will remain a provincial tourist gem for years to come.”

The seawall’s design was selected for its adaptability to lakeshore locations and for providing public accessibility.  Interlocking steel plates will be driven into the lake bottom forming the seawall.  The steel will be backfilled with rock and the boardwalk will be replaced.

“We are pleased with the province’s determination to restore and strengthen the seawall and re-establish the boardwalk which is an important part of our community’s charm,” Winnipeg Beach Mayor Don Pepe said.
