Agreement Addresses Impacts Of the Grand Rapids Hydroelectric Project

The province, Manitoba Hydro and the community of Moose Lake have signed an agreement to address the effects of the 1964 Grand Rapids Hydroelectric Project, Conservation Minister Stan Struthers announced today.

Struthers joined Bob Brennan, chair of Manitoba Hydro, and Sandra Lambert, mayor of Moose Lake, to sign a comprehensive forebay agreement. A forebay is the reservoir area of a hydroelectric generating station.

"This agreement is the result of many years of negotiations to address what Moose Lake experienced as a result of the Grand Rapids hydroelectric project of the early 1960s," said Struthers. "We have signed similar agreements with the Chemawawin Cree Nation and the community of Easterville."

The province, Manitoba Hydro and the community have concluded a final settlement agreement that includes a monetary component, the provision of additional land for community use and the opportunity for participation in a joint natural resource
co-management arrangement.

"We are pleased that outstanding issues which have affected our community have now been addressed and opportunities for future community development have been provided," Lambert said.
