HIGH WATER LEVEL ADVISORY FOR SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF LAKE WINNIPEG AND LAKE MANITOBA
Manitoba Water Stewardship has issued a high water level advisory for the
southern portions of Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba for November 15, 2005.
The storm presently approaching Manitoba from the west will bring strong
northeast winds over the lakes tonight, followed by strong north winds all day
Tuesday.
Environment Canada is predicting winds up to 60 km/hour. Winds over the
water could be even stronger.
Water levels with wind and wave action on Lake Winnipeg could reach 719
feet at Gimli, 719.5 feet at Winnipeg Beach and 720.5 feet at Chalet Beach and
the Delta area.
Levels on the east side of Lake Winnipeg should remain below 719 feet. The
highest levels are expected to occur late Tuesday evening.
The peak water levels will be slightly lower than for those of October 5,
2005, but wave action will be very strong.
With temperatures expected to decline to well below freezing on Tuesday,
freezing spray along the beaches could produce dangerous ice loads on trees
and buildings within about 75 feet of the shoreline.
Dikes constructed this autumn should prevent flooding. Property owners are
advised to take whatever action may be prudent to protect against high water
and icing.
Levels along the southern shorelines of Lake Manitoba may rise to 815 feet,
similar to those of October 5, 2005.
Icing conditions along the shoreline could be similar to that expected on
Lake Winnipeg. While flooding is not expected along Lake Manitoba, significant
erosion may occur.
Further updates will be provided if necessary.
