People with disabilities now have around-the-clock access to important information with the launch of a website at http://www.gov.mb.ca/dio/english/index.html, Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick, minister responsible for persons with disabilities, announced today.
“As we mark UN Day for Persons with Disabilities, we’re expanding the province’s ongoing commitment to Full Citizenship: A Manitoba Provincial Strategy on Disability to ensure people with disabilities can access important information at any time,” said Melnick. “Providing fast, easy and accessible information is key to achieving an inclusive society for people with disabilities.”
The new website meets the Level Triple-A, the highest level, of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) web content accessibility guidelines. Material on the site meets the priority three checkpoints from these accessibility guidelines.
Information on the website is designed to provide a greater understanding of how the province is working toward a barrier-free society, which is open and accessible.
The site features information on a wide range of provincially offered programs developed to assist persons with disabilities. It will be updated regularly with current news and information.
Manitoba’s first-ever Disabilities Issues Office was officially opened on UN Day for Persons with Disabilities in December 2003 and acts as a central review body for all provincial policies and programs for people with disabilities.
